While this week I will embark on a game jam, there are some percolating thoughts going on about what the next game project could be. Don’t take anything here as a clear “go” for what i’m going to do since it is all very half-formed for the time being.

For one there is no shortage of conceptual developments when it comes to the idealization of making an FPS adventure game. Scope wise I am horrified of it, but prototypes and design brainstorming has happened regardless. The adventure aspect is important, as the first person perspective has a latent immersion factor to it draws me to it.

Prototype wise I have been using Unity, but have contemplated the use of Unreal instead. In the prototypes I have experimented with procedural level segments and making a doom-style 2D enemy sprite system to some success.

I have called the project for now, Cyborg FPS.

Using scripted level gen for endless walkways, for instance

For the enemy design, the ghosts seen in the prototype were meant to be a very basic sprite to make sure the scripts are functional. The complexity of such animation is incredibly daunting, but there is some charm to it that allows for me to use what 2D illustration capabilities I have to have a larger diversity of forms and characters than what 3D rigs enable. Ideally I manage to pitch this project and get the funding to have a dedicated artist for the project but without a pitch deck that is not happening until I get vertical slice made.

Even without the use of proper shaders to give them shadows it is neat. The hexagons represent a “default” fail state.

Logline?

How far are you willing to seek the impossible? Take on the role of a cybernetic human seeking ascension in the far future by any means necessary- to that grand light you will go. Ascend.

The Meta

Game Genre: Adventure FPS / Action-Adventure

By Adventure FPS I mean that the Cyborg FPS has adventure elements. Maybe nothing more than in Marathon in practice. Combat is optional and most the enemies you encounter in the actual game will be hard to handle rivals or at best something you’re incapacitating.

World Genre: Sci-fi / Transhuman Scifi

You take on the role of a heavily augmented human, but this is not out of the norm for the world at large. Other humans will have augmentations and cybernetics, some of which are more advanced than yours. There is also alien life.
